2. The Brain
To support your child, we must first define what they are facing. Dyslexia is often misunderstood as a "vision problem" or a "motivation problem." It is neither.
The Scientific Reality Dyslexia is a neurobiological specific learning disability. This simply means your child’s brain is wired differently, specifically in the areas that process language (Sanfilippo et al., 2020).
What It Is: A persistent struggle with accurate or fluent word reading, spelling, and decoding words (Adlof & Hogan, 2018).
What It Isn't: It is not caused by poor vision, hearing problems, or a lack of intelligence.
The Intelligence Disconnect: brain imaging research confirms that these reading struggles happen regardless of IQ. Your child can be gifted and still exhibit the neural patterns of dyslexia (Tanaka et al., 2011).
